How do you motivate a swimmer?
Everyone feels a little burned out at some point in a swimming career. There are a lot of factors that can play a role in the burnout of a competitive swimmer. And, as a coach or a parent, you wonder: what can I do to help them through tough times?
There's no secret motivation recipe that would work for all swimmers. Every swimmer is unique, with their own set of motivations, beliefs, and desires.
Personality, beliefs, values, past experiences, and individual goals can influence a swimmer to overcome challenges.
For example, one swimmer may be encouraged to win gold medals at swimming meets, but that's not the case for everyone. Others may be motivated by the sense of achievement they feel after a successful training session. Some swimmers may be motivated by the social aspect of being at the swimming pool with teammates, while others seek motivation by observing famous swimmers.
It's best to connect with your swimmer and learn more about them. That will help you as a coach understand your athlete's individual needs and motivations.
Observe what motivational factors work for them and create a tailored approach to get them to swim fast.
Here are a few tips to motivate a swimmer:
Set achievable goals
Preparation for big races is a long road. Help the swimmer set realistic and attainable goals by breaking down big goals into small pieces.
Celebrate progress
Recognize and celebrate the swimmer's progress and achievements, no matter how small. That will build up the confidence needed for swimming fast.
Encourage positive self-talk
Competitive swimming is all about self-belief. Teach your athletes to focus on positive self-talk and ignore negative thoughts.
Provide constructive feedback
Let them know that you are paying attention to how they swim. Feedback will help to make changes to maximize performance and make them valued in the team.
Make it fun
Make the swimming experience enjoyable and fun by adding games or competitions to training sessions. Remember, swimming is just one part of their life that has to be enjoyable for long-term success.
Provide support
Offer emotional and mental support to the swimmer in and out of the pool. Build a bond and trust between each other. Encourage them to seek support when needed.
Offer variety
Swimming shouldn't be dry and boring. Mix up training routines to keep the swimmer interested and motivated.
Foster a growth mindset
Encourage your swimmers to accept challenges and embrace them. Foster self-belief in their ability to improve.
